Praying in the Lord’s Name

James 1:2-8, 4:13-15, 5:13-16

I. Introduction

Very truly, I tell you, if you ask anything of the Father in my name, he will give it to you.               John 16:23

Every war, every famine or plague, almost every death-bed, is a monument to a petition that was not granted.      C. S. Lewis

II.  What does James teach us about prayer?

>James 1:2-8, Pray for wisdom.

2 My brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of any kind, consider it nothing but joy, 3 because you know that the testing of your faith produces endurance; 4 and let endurance have its full effect, so that you may be mature and complete, lacking in nothing.

5 If any of you is lacking in wisdom, ask God, who gives to all generously and ungrudgingly, and it will be given you. 6 But ask in faith, never doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, driven and tossed by the wind; 7 for the doubter, being double-minded and unstable in every way, must not expect to receive anything from the Lord.                                                                                                                                                                                         James 1:2-8

 1.  We should                           in our difficulties.

2.  God will answer our prayer for spiritual                              .

I believe; help my unbelief!                                                           Mark 9:24

3.  Take your                    to God in prayer.

>James 4:13-15, Do not assume that the matters of life will work out.

13 Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to such and such a town and spend a year there, doing business and making money.” 14 Yet you do not even know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes. 15 Instead you ought to say, “If the Lord wishes, we will live and do this or that.”                                                                                                                                                James 4: 13-15

4.  Our mundane successes are not promised, we must pray “If the Lord                   …”

5.  God is                       . God will run the universe according to God’s plans and purposes. We should                          God in our prayers for being a just and righteous God.

6.  We should give                      to God always and for everything in our prayers.

 >James 5:13-16, Pray always.

13 Are any among you suffering? They should pray. Are any cheerful? They should sing songs of praise. 14 Are any among you sick? They should call for the elders of the church and have them pray over them, anointing them with oil in the name of the Lord.                                                                                                                                         James 5:13-14

7.  When we                    , we must pray and bring our needs to God.

8.  And when things are going well, pray and                      God.

9.  Pray                         .

10.  We must pray for and                            each other.

15 The prayer of faith will save the sick, and the Lord will raise them up; and anyone who has committed sins will be forgiven. 16 Therefore confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another, so that you may be healed. The prayer of the righteous is powerful and effective.                                                                                    James 5:15-16

11.  God is with us and                        us when we are ill. We                     need to be afraid.

12.  As we seek to live in response to God’s call, and as our lives become more holy, the more we pray                              to God’s will. And our prayers will bear much fruit as a result.

III.  Praying in the name of the Lord

Very truly, I tell you, if you ask anything of the Father in my name, he will give it to you.               John 16:23

To pray in the Lord’s name:

  1. We are acknowledging God’s                               .
  2. We are acknowledging God’s                               , namely God’s righteousness, holiness, steadfastness, mercy, covenantal faithfulness, and love.
  3. We have faith that God will honor God’s                                   .

God promises are Big & Important & Life Changing:

  1. God                            sins. (1 John 1:19; Eph 1:7-8)
  2. We will have                             life. (John 3:16)
  3. God is                        with us. We can enjoy God’s peace and experience God’s joy. (Phil 4:4-7)
  4. The                          of Jesus Christ will spread to all nations. (Mat. 24:14)
  5. God is restoring                        . God will restore creation. (Rom 8:18-22; Rev 21:1-22:5)

The main preoccupation of our prayers should be the outworking of the promises of God, which all through the Scriptures is linked to God’s working through his Word, which is now written on the hearts of these new covenant believers.                                  Gary Miller
